The Standard & Poor\u2019s 500 index, or S&P 500, is perhaps the world\u2019s most well-known stock index. The index contains 500 of the largest publicly traded companies in the U.S., making it a bellwether for stocks. It includes stocks across all 11 sectors of the economy, as defined by the GICS classification system.<\/p>\n

Why the S&P is shorthand for \u2018the market\u2019<\/h2>\n

When people ask \u201chow the market did today,\u201d they\u2019re often referring to the S&P 500.<\/p>\n

According to Standard & Poor\u2019s, the index represents about 80% of the total value of all stocks trading in the U.S. markets, which is why the index is considered synonymous with the market itself.<\/p>\n

Tens of trillions of dollars are invested in the companies in the index, with investors purchasing shares of individual companies directly or via funds that track the entire index.<\/p>\n

Investing in an index fund buys you immediate diversified exposure to the hundreds of companies contained in the index.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n

For companies, being added to the index is not only prestigious, it\u2019s also financially valuable.<\/p>\n

When a new firm is added to the S&P 500, all the mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking the index must adjust by purchasing shares of the new stock and selling the old one that\u2019s being replaced. And when net new money is added to an S&P 500 index fund, the fund company must buy the stocks in it.<\/p>\n

All that buying helps keep the stocks in the S&P 500 running high. A strong stock price makes it cheaper for a company to raise money by issuing new shares and generally makes the firm more attractive.<\/p>\n

How does a stock get added to the S&P 500?<\/h2>\n

The companies listed on the index change with some regularity, with some being added as others are removed. For example, in February 2026, S&P Dow Jones Indices, which manages the S&P 500 index, added Ciena and removed Dayforce. In December 2025, S&P added Ares Management and removed Kellanova.<\/p>\n
