When Is Tax Day?<\/h2>\n

Tax Day is Tuesday, April 15, 2026\u2014all individual federal income tax returns are due on this day.1<\/sup> This deadline is for federal returns, not state taxes (if you live somewhere with a state income tax). Note: When April 15 falls on Saturday, Sunday or a legal holiday, tax deadlines and payments are due the next business day.\n <\/p>\n

For those planning to file online, the date and time in your time zone when you click \u201csubmit\u201d determines if your return is filed on time. Don\u2019t worry\u2014you\u2019ll receive an electronic confirmation that the IRS has accepted your return.\n <\/p>\n

Need to snail mail your return? The IRS considers a mailed return on time if the envelope is addressed correctly, has plenty of postage, and is postmarked by April 15.2<\/sup>\n <\/p>\n

What if I\u2019m overseas or on military deployment?<\/h3>\n

For very special cases, like if you live overseas or if you\u2019re deployed on military duty outside the U.S., you have an automatic two-month extension to file your taxes without needing to request one.\n <\/p>\n

This means you have until\u00a0June 15\u00a0to file and send in payment without being hit with a penalty. But, of course, there\u2019s a catch\u2014you still have to pay\u00a0interest<\/em>\u00a0on any owed taxes not paid by the original due date.3\u00a0<\/sup>(Whomp, whomp.)\n <\/p>\n

We recommend sticking with the regular deadline to stay ahead of the game. That way, you don\u2019t wind up paying Uncle Sam more than you have to.\n <\/p>\n

What if I live in a state impacted by a natural disaster?\u00a0<\/h3>\n

If you live somewhere affected by a natural disaster\u2014like a hurricane, wildfire or earthquake\u2014the IRS usually postpones various tax filing and payment deadlines to give those folks more time to get their taxes in order.\n <\/p>\n

But keep in mind that not everyone living in these states automatically qualifies for these extended tax deadlines. The IRS only grants extensions to individuals and businesses in federally designated disaster areas, usually specific counties identified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).\n <\/p>\n

Make sure you check with your state\u2019s government and keep up with IRS announcements for any updates on disaster-related extensions for your area. If you\u2019re still not able to file your tax return by these new deadlines, you should file a tax extension with the IRS.\n <\/p>\n

When Is the Deadline to Pay My Taxes?<\/h2>\n

Your tax payment deadline depends on your filing status. For most individuals, it\u2019s simple: Your deadline to file and pay is Tax Day\u2014which is also the worst<\/em> day to find out you have an unexpected tax bill to deal with.\n <\/p>\n

If you can\u2019t pay your bill on time, the IRS does offer payment plans (with interest, mind you).4<\/sup> But it\u2019s always easier to handle a tax bill when you know about it ahead of time. Then you can come up with your own payment plan by Tax Day.\n <\/p>\n

What If I Can\u2019t File by the Tax Deadline? \u00a0<\/h2>\n

If you can\u2019t file your taxes by Tax Day, don\u2019t panic\u2014you can get a\u00a0six-month extension\u00a0by\u00a0filling out Form 4868. Just be sure to submit it by Tax Day.\n <\/p>\n

If you zoom past April 15 without an extension, you\u2019ll pay a failure-to-file penalty, which is 5% of your unpaid taxes each month up to a maximum penalty of 25%.5<\/sup>\u00a0For returns over 60 days late, the minimum penalty is either $510 or 100% of the tax owed (whichever amount is less).6<\/sup>\u00a0Ouch!\n <\/p>\n

Keep in mind\u2014and this is really important: Even if you\u2019ve requested an extension to\u00a0file<\/em>, that doesn\u2019t mean you have an extension to\u00a0pay<\/em>. (Bummer, right?)\n <\/p>\n

You still need to send in your tax payment to the IRS on your filing due date. The last thing you want is to get hit with a penalty for paying late, which could be anywhere from 0.5% to 25% of those unpaid taxes.7<\/sup>\u00a0\n <\/p>\n

When is my tax return due after filing an extension?<\/h3>\n

For most people, you have until October 15 (six months after April 15) to file your tax return after an extension\u2014a pretty solid amount of time.8<\/sup> But if you\u2019re one of the few with a different filing due date, your extension due date will be different too.\n <\/p>\n

What\u00a0happens if I don\u2019t file\u00a0by the extension due date?<\/h3>\n

You\u2019re going to have to pay that failure-to-file penalty we told you about\u2014and that\u2019s just flushing cash down the toilet. We want you to conquer Tax Day, not the other way around.\n <\/p>\n

Whatever your situation, we recommend that you file your taxes sooner rather than later. It can make all the difference in how much you\u2019ll end up having to shell out to good ol\u2019 Uncle Sam.\n <\/p>\n
