Bring your A game by following these 12 job interview tips:\n    <\/p>\n<h2>1. Research the company and your interviewers.<\/h2>\n<p>Make it your goal to be as informed about your potential employer as possible.\u00a0Preparing for your interview\u00a0by doing your research beforehand shows that you take initiative and that\u00a0<em>you care<\/em>. Here are a few things to research:\n    <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The company\u2019s history<\/li>\n<li>Their mission, vision and values<\/li>\n<li>Their leadership team<\/li>\n<li>Their products or services<\/li>\n<li>Everything you can find about the role you\u2019re applying for<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also, see what you can find out about your interviewer! Keep it cool\u2014don\u2019t stalk them obsessively\u2014but look for their bio information on the company\u2019s website or connect with them on LinkedIn.\n    <\/p>\n<div class=\"BlogInsert-copy\">\n<p>Get expert money advice to reach your money goals faster!<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Take notes on what you learn and bring them to your interview. Use that information to spark conversation and connection.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>2. Dress for the company.<\/h2>\n<p>As you decide\u00a0what to wear to the interview, take the time to find out what the dress code is at the organization you\u2019re applying to. The goal is to not be underdressed or overdressed and to fit in with the culture. You don\u2019t want to show up in a three-piece suit if everyone at the office wears shorts and T-shirts every day! When in doubt, smart casual is the way to go.\n    <\/p>\n<p>And regardless of what type of clothes you end up wearing, make sure they\u2019re clean, ironed and fit well.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>3. Show up early to your interview.<\/h2>\n<p>Rushing into your interview stressed, late and maybe a little sweaty isn\u2019t a great first impression to make. \u201cMy alarm didn\u2019t go off\u201d and \u201cTraffic was crazy\u201d are not explanations\u2014they\u2019re excuses.\n    <\/p>\n<p>The last thing you want to do is start your job interview with a lame excuse. Instead, double the amount of estimated traffic you might encounter and set multiple alarms so you don\u2019t accidentally hit snooze and fall back asleep.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>4. Clarify your personal mission statement.<\/h2>\n<p>You need to be prepared to explain why you want to be a part of this team and how you\u2019ll contribute. Think about it: If this job doesn\u2019t align with your skills and\u00a0what you\u2019re passionate about, then why are you even applying?\n    <\/p>\n<p>Writing your own\u00a0personal mission statement\u00a0will help you put your purpose into words\u2014for your own benefit as well as for the recruiter. Then, when the recruiter asks why you\u2019re a good fit for the position, you\u2019ll be able to answer with confidence!\n    <\/p>\n<h2>5. Be fully present. \u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s crazy that we even need to talk about this, but unfortunately, being glued to our phones is a cultural blind spot for many people.\n    <\/p>\n<p>Keep your phone in your purse or briefcase\u2014or heck, you can even leave it in the car! Unless there\u2019s a specific reason or request from your interviewer for you to use it, you should never,\u00a0<em>ever<\/em>\u00a0be on your phone during an interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p>When you pull out your phone even to check a quick text message, you\u2019re actually sending your own message\u2014that you\u2019re distracted and valuing something else above the interviewer\u2019s time. And by the way, this applies to smart watches too.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>6. Bring a copy of your resum\u00e9 or portfolio.<\/h2>\n<p>If the interviewer forgot to print your resum\u00e9 or doesn\u2019t remember the type of work in your portfolio, having an extra copy on hand will show them that you\u2019re always prepared.\n    <\/p>\n<p>Besides, if you\u2019ve created the perfect resum\u00e9 and\u00a0cover letter, of course you want to show them off as much as possible!\n    <\/p>\n<h2>7. Don\u2019t lie or overshare.<\/h2>\n<p>Whether they ask about your salary, job responsibilities or experience, always tell the truth. Getting caught lying is an instant deal breaker.<sup>\u00a0\u00a0<\/sup>Why risk it?\n    <\/p>\n<p>Along with not lying, don\u2019t overshare.\n    <\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say your interviewer asks you about your last place of employment. Our tendency is to give them every single detail. Instead of giving them a brief answer about your responsibilities at your last job, you tell them about the difficult people on your team and the long hours you were expected to work. When you do that, you create questions that don\u2019t need to be created.\n    <\/p>\n<p>Instead, answer the question specifically and let the interviewer ask follow-up questions if they\u2019re needed.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>8. Be yourself.<\/h2>\n<p>Bad acting happens all the time in interviews. Don\u2019t try to be an actor. Be authentic. Your nerves are already off the charts, so this is not the time to try something outside your default mode.\n    <\/p>\n<p>If you try to be funny when you\u2019re not really that funny, it\u2019s going to be awkward and uncomfortable. So, in this case, stay in your lane. If you end up getting the job, they\u2019ll figure you out pretty quickly, so just be yourself from the get-go. \u00a0\n    <\/p>\n<h2>9. Check your nonverbal cues.<\/h2>\n<p>Your body language sends powerful messages. It can portray confidence and display interest and engagement, but it can also be a tip-off that you\u2019re nervous or underprepared. Here are the most important cues to be mindful of during your job interview:\n    <\/p>\n<h3>Make eye contact.\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>Looking someone in the eye makes you seem confident\u2014regardless of how you feel on the inside. Even if it feels uncomfortable, keep the eye contact consistent. I promise you, it\u2019ll be far more uncomfortable for the interviewer if you stare at the ground while they\u2019re speaking to you.\n    <\/p>\n<h3>Smile.\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>Who doesn\u2019t want to hire someone who is friendly and approachable? That\u2019s how you come across when you smile a lot. Just make sure there\u2019s nothing in your teeth before you walk in!\n    <\/p>\n<h3>Act engaged.<strong> <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sit up, lean in, and nod your head. This posture and these nonverbal cues communicate that you\u2019re engaged, interested, and listening closely to what the interviewer is saying. That\u2019s the type of person most organizations could only\u00a0wish to hire!\n    <\/p>\n<h3>Take notes.\u00a0<\/h3>\n<p>Bring a pen and notebook to your interview so you can write down important things the interviewer says. This will communicate that you\u2019re teachable and interested in what they have to say.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>10. Don\u2019t ask about your salary right away.<\/h2>\n<p>When you ask about money, paid time off or holidays too soon, it\u2019s a huge turnoff. That communicates to the interviewer that you\u2019re more interested in the perks instead of the work itself. If the recruiter decides to bring it up, that\u2019s great\u2014but you shouldn\u2019t force it on the first conversation. Ideally, you\u2019ll talk about salary once the job offer has been made.\n    <\/p>\n<h2>11. Ask questions.<\/h2>\n<p>Yes, you\u2019ll need to\u00a0be prepared to answer questions\u00a0(like the classic &#8220;tell me about yourself&#8221;), but this interview goes both ways!\n    <\/p>\n<p>Here are a few examples of questions you can ask:\n    <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>What does it look like to be a successful team member here?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>What do you (the interviewer) love most about your job? What are your greatest challenges?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Where is this organization headed? What are you looking forward to as a company?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How would you describe the company culture?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Write your questions down on a professional-looking notepad and bring them with you.\u00a0\n    <\/p>\n<h2>12. Send a thank-you note.<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to follow up after you\u2019ve crushed your interview. Send a quick note (email works great) thanking the people you spoke with for their time and effort. If you want the job, say so! Here\u2019s one way you could word it:\n    <\/p>\n<p><em>Thank you for taking the time to talk about the ____ position. I\u2019m grateful that I had the opportunity to meet you and learn about the organization.
